BIW, established in 1971, is a medium-sized company with over 500 employees and turnover of over 72 million euros. As a leading supplier of silicone and textile glass products, BIW stocks a variety of tested materials with a textile glass, silicone and silicone foam basis for applications in the automotive field. The focus here is placed on a wide range of products including preinstallable and retrofitable protective hoses and on high temperature resistance and conformity with LV312-3. Customer desires related to color, hardness and mechanical properties can be realized over a broad spectrum by virtue of BIW’s in-house recipe development and composition preparation capabilities. In addition to protective and insulating sleeves made from a combination of technical textiles and their numerous refinements, the production range of BIW includes compact silicone materials and silicone foam with reduced density as well as moulded silicone parts. The large manufacturing area offers the possibility of supplying completed assembly groups. An integrated management system comforming to ISO/TS16949, ISO9001, ISO13485, ISO14001, ISO50001 and IIP (Investors in People) is implemented at the location.

Fibre glass – a very special material
BIW processes different types of fibre glass yarns and twines to hoses, cords, ribbons and seals using the textile glass technology. They are used in all different sectors. As an alternative to plaiting machines, modern knitting and warp knitting machines are available so that there are virtually no limits for the type of construction. In particular for insulation and protection hoses there is an increasing variety due to the fact that many different techniques and materials are used for impregnation, coating and sheathing of the fabric structure. Along with treatment in the liquid phase (infusion, impregnation) BIW realises a unique solid rubber coating with elastomers in the extrusion process.

Silicone – a special compound
Due to long-term experience and intensive development work on the field of elastomer technology BIW is time and again relying on innovative and new development standards. One example is our know-how and process for manufacturing high-quality silicone compounds, the basis for our end products.
Our in-house compounding for additional components (additives) to be mixed in with the basic silicone for customisation, to produce material blends and refine them through a strainer. The resulting high-quality silicone compounds are available in a wide spectrum of colours and hardness ranges. These compounds guarantee several chemical, physical and physiological properties in the end product.
We process high-temperature vulcanised silicone rubber (HTV) and liquid silicone rubber (LSR) in state-of-the-art processes such as extrusion and injection moulding.

The excellent properties of the material liquid silicone rubber (LSR), combined with the tool and processing technology and the expertise in mixing of the BIW experts offer the ideal basis for the solution of customised 3-D elastomer requirements.
As compared to peroxide vulcanisation as customary for solid rubber moulding (HTV), addition curing of the liquid silicon rubber (LSR) offers the advantage that no undesired decomposition products will result. LSR moulded parts contain neither toxic nor aggressive substances.
BIW configures scenarios of technical and economic solutions for special tasks, develops 2-component parts based on integrated tool systems and realises order-oriented series production, either in a semi-automatic insertion process or in highly efficient automatic mode. The individual customer requirements always are the benchmark in the scope of a thermoplastic-silicon 2K project.
